Cheer in the Storm

Life is a mix of everything awesome, amazing,  great, good, bad, nasty and outright pathetic.  I strongly believe that the good days have been more as compared to bad days. Case in point is mine. The Lord God who promises to never leave or forsake has been true to His Word! He has been more real to me during the difficult times. What is even better is that I would never have known Him better if it wasn’t for the hard and difficult experiences.

So why cheer in the storm?  Sounds ridiculous I know but it is possible. Remember the time when the disciples of Jesus were on the lake and got caught in a storm?  Right about the same time, they saw what they thought to be a ‘ghost’! Mh!, I dislike ghostly movies or the thought there might be a ghost anywhere near me. I therefore have a clue what they felt.

“And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.  And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear.  But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. Matthew 14:25-27 “

Really now, really? Good cheer? There is nothing in that situation that calls for cheer.

And then Paul’s letter to the Phillipians

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6–7”

Jesus and Paul are both on the topic of peace.

Dictionary definition of peace is as follows in light of this piece:- a state of tranquillity or quiet, freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions, a quiet and calm state of mind.

From the definition, peace is not the absence of trouble in our lives. It is possible to be in the midst of the biggest crisis in your life and still experience peace. That’s the true kind of peace that Jesus gives—peace that surpasses all understanding. Naturally speaking, it does not make sense for you to feel completely at rest and at peace in the middle of a stressful situation, but supernaturally, you can be filled with His peace! Peace of God.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27”

Jesus did not suggest peace, He gave it to us for free. Embrace peace in the storms you find yourself.

Be at peace when bills pile. Be at peace when the answer to your prayer has delayed. Be at peace when someone is driving you crazy. Be at peace in the traffic. Be at peace when your world is falling around you. Christ is our peace. Be at peace when the doctor’s report is bad.

Instead of worry, choose peace. Peace of Christ wins. Cheer up! SHALOM!
