What’s your Idol?

Reading through the Bible exposes so much about idol worship. And God through the prophets warned over and over again against worship of idols.

Idolatry was first mentioned in Exodus 34:14 where He says, :Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” God does not share His glory with another god because mostly idols are gods of sorts.

In light of this, Exodus 34:17 God says “Do not make any idols.

An idol in essence is anything in form of an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship. It is also a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered.

Ezekiel 14: 4 says “Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them myself in keeping with their great idolatry.”

In short, we may have an idea that we have idolized in our hearts to the point of thinking that God planted them into your heart. Some of the prophesies will be confirmed by a prophet just so that it’s a done deal. If we idolise a career, He will make it look like it’s His best plan for us, but sooner or later, issues start coming up thus leading to doubt and some sense of worry. I have heard times when I was ten times sure I heard from God about an issue or a person, only for it to turn out badly. when I seriously evaluate the situation, I have always come to the conclusion that the thing I thught was from God was my own idea and idol of what I really wanted to happen in my life.

This whole , a little further in Verse 15,  He says, I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols.’

The warning for us here is that we need to be care careful with our heart, and give God due place of honour in our lives. Failure to do that will mostly cause us to exalt the idols. We may just end up with the things we wish for or hold valuable that may in turn destroy us.

Let God have the first place in your life.
